Managing the Parent Interface
Unfortunately, a common quote from many coaches is “I love coaching. I love the kids. I can’t stand the parents.”
The most important step in successfully managing the parent interface is holding a pre-season parents meeting. This is vital to discuss your plans and expectations for the season and will greatly minimize any potential issues going forward. Key points to cover include:
- Overall coaching philosopy and approach
- Expectations on attendance
- Preferred means of communication if parents have questions/concerns
- Encourage questions from parents and express appreciation for their interest and concern.
- Do this each year…even if the parents/kids haven’t changed as expectations can change as kids get older.
Other Keys to Managing the Parent Interface
- Know your objectives; do what you know to be valuable to the kids, not the parents.
- No coach can please everyone. Know the Club and game rules.
- Be prepared to abide by the rules and explain them to the parents.
- Handle any confrontation in a one-on-one and not in a crowd situation.
- Let the parent/guardian talk while you listen to their viewpoint, and then thank them for it.
- Be open to feedback.
- Resist unfair pressure. It is your responsibility as a coach to make the final decision.
- Do not discuss individual players with other parents/guardians.
- Show the same respect for each player that you want directed to you.
- Ask parents/guardians not to criticize or coach their children during the games or practices.
- Don't let a player be humiliated, especially by their own parents/guardians
- Don't blame players for their parent's/guardian’s actions.
- Seek the help of the Director of Coaching or Club President if needed.
- Be consistent! .... and be Fair!
